iBT

 

It is the Internet-based TOEFL, not the current CBT type, which is also known as the Next Generation TOEFL.

    Differences with CBT

     

  • Overall –
    It's not CAT In other words, it's not the type in which the next question's difficulty varies depending the answer of the previous question; there is no structure section; there is a question with more allotted points. (Indicated next to the question)

  • In parts –
    The passage are about 2 times longer (5-10 paragraphs, 700-900 words), the definition pops up when a hard vocabulary is clicked from the passage; the question about the summary or analysis of the entire passage is in the form of a table. (A question with more allotted points.); cannot return to the previous passage. (But can navigate within the passage.)

  • Score System –
    "Score from the new TOEFL test will provide information about performance in the four skill areas students need for success in an academic environment."

    Features of the iBT Listening
  • 6-7 questions for one passage.
  • Total 6 passages (about 34 questions)
  • Part A (Short Conversation) is excluded.
  • The passages are much longer.
  • Because the passages are longer, certain sentences are read repeatedly.
  • There are short answer questions with different points allotted.
  • Importance of specialized terms is highlighted.
  • After the Listening section, Speaking, Writing sections follow right away. (Integrated form)
